As a resourceful and versatile design firm, we often work on projects that require marrying a new aesthetic into an existing home’s design. That was the case with this Newport Coast remodel, wherein a traditional home was to be transformed into a more contemporary living space. While we were awarded some areas to completely renovate, such as all baths, we were allowed only simple updates to others, like the kitchen. An expedited time frame was an added consideration.
The largest endeavor required the addition of a new first floor suite and private bathroom. All of the aged travertine floors were replaced with cleaner, large-scale limestone and wide-plank white oak hardwood. The sweeping staircase, which had custom-cut limestone slab treads and risers, also featured a custom-made stair railing; the combination of the stone steps and modern-interpretation of a classic iron detail act as a transition between the remaining traditional elements and new contemporary sensibility. Additionally, all fireplaces received new facades; many of the ceilings were redesigned to feature more contemporary details, like cove lighting and drywall-boxed beams; all walls, ceilings, and trim were given a fresh coat of paint, including the custom-designed baseboards; the lighting, electrical, A/V, and mechanical elements were modernized and enhanced for efficiency; the existing kitchen cabinetry and configuration was updated with new appliances and marble slabs; new, contemporary cabinetry designs were integrated into the family room entertainment area, master closet, and all baths.
After this intense renovation, the client was able to move back in with their personal things and resume life as usual, but in a better-suited home.
